Mr. Brightside
Mr. Brightside is a tradition song at Duke East, usually played in the first half of every dance. The only requirement of the song is to scream the lyrics at the loudest volume you can muster. The song can also be known to spawn a mosh pit.
A Brief History of Mr. Brightside
Mr. Brightside was released by the band The Killers as their first single on September 29, 2003. At first, it didn't garner much success. That is, until the re-release of the song as the second track on the album Hot Fuss, which was released on June 15, 2004. The song focuses on lead singer Brandon FLowers as he tells the story of him finding out his girlfriend cheated on him. The music video is themed around the 2001 drama Moulin Rouge. Mr. Brightside is among the 25 longest charting songs in the UK, having spent 206 weeks on the UK singles chart.
Lyrics
Coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss
It was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
And I just can't look
It's killing me
And taking control
Jealousy
Turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
Coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss
It was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
And I just can't look
It's killing me
And taking control
Jealousy
Turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
I never
I never
I never
I never
Not-So-Notable Tipsters With Mr. Brightside Affinities
Mr. Brightside is regarded as the best tradition song and the best song in general by 2020 fourth-year TiPster, and author of this article, Macie Richardson. She is commonly referred to as having two separate personalities, the everyday personality and the personality when Mr. Brightside is playing. She wore a Mr. Brightside pin on her lanyard and woke her very tolerant roommate with Mr. Brightside every single morning. She gladly considers Mr. Brightside a personality trait and her best one. Her RAG superlative for term one 2019 was "most likely to be coming out of her cage and she'll be doing just fine." She hopes to lead Mr. Brightside during her fourth year at Duke East.
