PARI

TIP Campus

Information about PARI's origins as a field studies campus are hard to come by. However, it is known that PARI has been a field studies site since 2003 (shoutouts to Patricia Craig). PARI saw its last year as a field studies campus in 2019, since Duke ended the field studies program with tipster Victor (Thicctor) being the last student ever on campus. Tipsters stayed in the Apollo and Gemini cabins and ate meals at Smiley's, PARI's dining hall. Classes were held in building 4. As far as I'm aware, the only course ever offered at PARI was Astronomy, Astrobiology, & Physics.

Notable Events

• Ismael’s Astrobiology Presentation: Absolutely ridiculous presentation about how to get humanity to level 2 on the Kardashev scale. Included gems such as: suggesting we strip mine and annihilate the entire planet Mercury, calling our current civilization “pathetic” for only being a 0.7 on the Kardashev scale, asserting that ethics committees only cause problems, and explaining how we needed to use electromagnetic cannons to launch all the mirrors into orbit.
• Shannon popping off on everyone that one time: Shannon got triggered when a few people were a couple minutes late to class at 4:30 since they were in the bathroom. Carly (resident badass) retorted by telling Shannon “you don’t know my bladder.” This prompted Shannon to send Carly and her sister Amy into the hall, where Carly yelled "thank you, thank you," and several other students almost walked up and left with them. In the hallway, Carly and Amy straight up told Shannon they didn’t like her. Shannon was later seen wearing lipstick and crying in the back of the classroom.
• Hard no: At a lunch during the second week some of the Tipsters asked an RC if we could play Mario Kart on one of the projectors/tvs in building 4; said RC then asked Shannon if it was ok if we did this after class. Shannon then later addressed the student body saying that it was "gonna be a hard no" because we were at camp and that we should be interacting more with each other instead. Later that same night, tipsters met outside on the porch to play Mario Kart anyway.
• Victor playing CSGO and/or Rainbow 6 late at night: Victor would get really mad when he lost; he’d often yell Chinese swears (ex. 杀你妈, 草你妈) or English swears (ex. mother[expletive] piece of [expletive]) (or both) and punch the wall.
• Victor watching some... interesting pieces of media and commenting that it was "fancy" and that people represented by subjects of said media were "good for society"
• Victor showing Room 2 boys an interesting folder with an interesting title in Chinese on his phone with interesting pictures, then claiming that said subjects of the photos are more beautiful with swimsuits on
• Victor talking about interesting actions he did at school staircases in China
• [redacted] constantly moaning or just being loud/hyper in general
• [redacted] always playing that one video where the guy says "I want to put it in your a**", then getting in trouble for showing it to Chris
• [redacted] didn’t know Habiba’s name until halfway through the term
• [redacted] saying “Eshanvi” and then laughing hysterically daily, typically just after midnight as his roommates were going to sleep
• [redacted] being actually respectable for like 15 minutes while he was presenting then immediately moaning
• Terry’s absolutely unbeatable vocal range
• Shannon getting absolutely flamed in the meme competition
• Having some extremely interesting conversations about uncontroversial topics with Grayson at every meal possible and at the park
• That one time Grayson smiled
• Getting both the PARI ball and Ismael’s shoe stuck in the tree.
