The Human Machine

The Human Machine was a class taught at Duke East Term II 2005 by Robert Martinez (yes? not sure... i'll have to check) and was attended by an amazing 8 students. And London the TA. The class also worked heavily with PILF on some occasions, watching a number of movies together and having open discussions.

Robert

Robert, the instructor, is known for also playing drums in the jam session. It is rumored he will be teaching From Bach to Rock in 2006. (However, it should be known that B2R 2006 was taught by Anu Kirk.)

London

Though only TA, London was actually the stricter adult of the class. The phrase "London is coming... Look busy!" is for this reason emblazoned on the front of the class t-shirt, along with a stick-drawing of a terrifying cyborg London on the back.

Class Material

The class read several books and packets and watched several movies. Some of these include:

  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  • I, Robot by Isaac Asimov
  • The Day Of The Locust by Nathanael West
  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (film) directed by Rouben Mamoulian
  • RoboCop (film) directed by Paul Verhoeven
  • Essays by Descartes, Sir Francis Bacon, and others
